The Society for Democratic Rights (SDR), New Delhi, and the Georgetown University Law Center, Washington DC co-hosted the 4th Comparative Constitutional Law discussion on the topic “Recent Trends of the Supreme Court of India and the United States Supreme Court”.
In 2024, our esteemed guests were the Hon’ble Chief Justice of India Mr. Sanjeev Khanna and Dean William M. Treanor, Dean & Executive Vice President Paul Regis Dean Leadership Chair, Georgetown Law.
The inaugural discussion in the series was held in October 2020 on the occasion of 150 years celebrations of Georgetown Law. Our esteemed guests from India in the past have been Hon’ble Chief Justice of India Dr. Dhananjaya Yeshwant Chandrachud (Retd.), Hon’ble Chief Justice of India Mr. NV Ramana (Retd.), Hon’ble Chief Justice of India Mr. Justice UU Lalit (Retd.), Hon’ble Justice Ms. Justice Indu Malhotra (Retd.), and Hon’ble Justice Ms. Pratibha M. Singh.
The esteemed guests compared approaches of the two Supreme Courts in interpreting and securing fundamental rights of the citizens of their respective nations. The global responses of the Indian Supreme Court under the leadership of the country’s 51th Chief Justice and other Justices of the apex court, and the role played by the American Supreme Court in its journey were the core focus of the discussion.
